What belongs in the denominator

Use meetings actually held, not the number originally printed on a calendar. A cancellation changes the denominator; a personal absence does not.

Attendance systems may count laboratories, tutorials, or clinical sessions separately. Combine them only when the policy applies one common threshold.

An instructor can also record lateness as partial attendance. Convert that policy into credited meetings before entering the figures rather than inventing a fraction here.

To plan the next decision, check how many absences the full schedule permits or estimate the meetings needed to rebuild the rate.

Calculation method

attendance rate = attended meetings ÷ meetings held × 100

The percentage describes the record to date. It does not decide whether an excused absence is counted by the institution.

A completed-record example

With 29 attended meetings out of 32 held, attendance is 90.6%. Against a 90% requirement, the record is 0.6 percentage points above the line and contains three absences.

Interpreting the comparison

A positive point difference means the current record is above the entered requirement; a negative value shows the shortfall. Being above the line today does not guarantee the final percentage if meetings remain.

Keep the source record beside the result. A percentage without dates cannot reveal a missing scan, an unposted excuse, or a duplicated meeting.

Reconcile the attendance record

  1. Reconcile the portal with your own dated record.
  2. Remove cancelled meetings from the held count.
  3. Enter the published threshold without rounding it.
  4. Review any special rule for lateness or excused absences.

Questions about the result

Should cancelled classes count?

No. A meeting that never occurred should not be included among classes held.

Does an excused absence count as attended?

Only if the written policy awards attendance credit for it. The calculator follows the credited count you enter.

Keep a record that can be checked

Save the dates behind both counts, especially when the course uses several meeting types. A dated list lets you trace a disagreement to a specific lecture, laboratory, tutorial, or clinical session. A bare percentage cannot show whether the instructor posted a meeting late, counted a makeup session twice, or applied a partial-credit rule for lateness.

When the course has a high-stakes attendance condition, take a snapshot or export the official record at sensible intervals. Note the policy version and the date of the calculation. If an appeal or correction is needed, that small audit trail is more useful than a recalculated percentage built from memory near the end of term.
