An item belongs in exactly one of the full, partial, or zero groups. Duplicating an item inflates both earned and available points.
If different questions have different maximums, group identical values or total the rubric points directly.
Another part of the record may need to handle wrong-answer penalties instead.
Working through the denominator
Boundary: All entered items share one maximum and one partial fraction; use separate calculations when a rubric awards several partial levels.
Combining full and partial items
Eighteen full items at four points earn 72 points. Seven half-credit items add 14 points, producing 86 of 120 available points, or 71.7%.
Partial credit needs a declared basis
A 50% partial category should reflect the scoring key, not a guess based on perceived effort. Document how the fraction was assigned.
For multipart items, adding awarded subpart points may be more accurate than placing the whole item in one partial category.
A later decision may be easier after you use the broader test-scoring workspace.
Reconcile the scoring categories
- Group only items with the same maximum.
- Confirm one partial-credit fraction.
- Reconcile every scored item to one category.
- Preserve unrounded earned points until the final percentage.
Questions that affect interpretation
Can I enter several partial-credit levels?
Run each level separately or add its awarded rubric points directly.
Do blanks belong in the zero group?
Yes, when the scoring rule awards zero points and no separate penalty.
What if items have different point values?
Group equal-value items or use a points-based grade calculation.
Preserve the rubric trail
Record the item identifiers placed in each category and the rule that produced the partial fraction. This allows a regrade to be traced without reconstructing every decision.
If a rubric changes after moderation, update awarded subparts first and rerun the totals. Do not adjust the final percentage independently of the underlying points.
For a rubric with several criteria, preserve awarded and available points by criterion before combining them. A total partial fraction can reproduce the overall score but cannot show whether the response lost credit for method, reasoning, accuracy, communication, or an omitted component.
Moderation may change the interpretation of a descriptor without changing the maximum item value. Update the affected item classifications and retain the earlier scoring version for comparison.
