Conductor Resistance Calculator
Conductor Resistance provides a checkable estimate of conductor resistance. It is intended for scenario comparison, not as automatic approval of a component or installation.
Run the Conductor Resistance scenario
Do not mix values recorded under different conditions.
Before entering values
Record conductor temperature and whether values are measured, nominal, or calculated. Nameplate and meter values are not interchangeable unless they describe the same condition.
Values used below a division bar must stay positive. A prefix error can move the result by several orders of magnitude. For the companion wire resistance calculation, open Wire Resistance Calculator.
- Resistivity
- Default example: 0.0175 Ω·mm²/m. Enter resistivity in Ω·mm²/m.
- Conductor length
- Default example: 30 m. Enter conductor length in m.
- Cross-sectional area
- Default example: 2.5 mm². Enter cross-sectional area in mm².
Conductor resistance: calculation method
Here, Conductor resistance is obtained from R = ρ × L ÷ A. The formula draws on Resistivity, Conductor length, and Cross-sectional area.
The defaults produce 0.2100 Ω. Replace them with measurements from one operating state.
Estimate resistance from material and geometry. Material Resistivity Calculator covers the related resistivity step.
How to use the result
Read Conductor resistance as the outcome of this equation, not as automatic equipment approval. Compare it with a second case representing tolerance or temperature.
A result without its source conditions is difficult to compare or audit. Another relevant worksheet is Current Density Calculator.
Using the answer downstream
Record resistivity, conductor length, and cross-sectional area with conductor resistance. Include the operating state and data source.
Transfer conductor resistance with all available digits during downstream arithmetic. Round at the final reporting step.
What the formula leaves out
Temperature, strand construction, and termination resistance are outside the ideal material formula.
Additional checks may be needed for lead and contact resistance, source impedance, and temperature drift. Do not hide omitted behavior inside an unexplained correction factor.
Record conductor temperature and whether values are measured, nominal, or calculated. If you also need required conductor area, continue with Wire Gauge Calculator.
Questions about Conductor Resistance
How should I compare two Conductor Resistance cases?
Keep unaffected entries fixed so the cause of the difference remains visible. Record conductor temperature and whether values are measured, nominal, or calculated.
Can I select equipment from this number alone?
The calculator does not approve equipment or supply an unexplained margin. Compare against the expected circuit operating point.
Should intermediate values be rounded?
Keep full precision while transferring conductor resistance; round only at the final reporting or selection step.
What happens when a denominator is zero?
A zero denominator is undefined, so the affected field has a positive minimum.
